Froglix Flashback: Jawbox

The year was 1993 and Jawbox had pulled off what many thought to be the unthinkable.   They left the legendary label of DC hardcore, Dischord Records, for the greener pastures of a major label (Atlantic to be exact) and not too long after we find bassist Kim Collete, front man/guitarist Jay Robbins, guitarist Bill Barbot and drummer Zach Barocas debuting on MTV in 1994.  The song?  “Savory” from the album entitled [itunes link=”http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/savory/id207081205?uo=4″ title=”Jawbox on iTunes” text=”[itunes link=”http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/savory/id207081205?uo=4″ title=”For Your Own Special Sweetheart” text=”For Your Own Special Sweetheart”].

Probably one of the more under appreciated bands of the era, their 2nd album did well on college stations but failed to produce a mainstream single so they were dropped.  Damn it.  So, where are they now?  Eventually the band broke up and its members went on to pursue other projects and passions.  Collete and Barbot started Desoto Records, which is still in existence today.  Barocas went on to either start or join other bands as did Robbins, who can also add successful Producer to his list of accomplishments.

I liked this band…still do.  Am I biased because Jawbox got started in the DC area where I happen to be from?  Yup.  What of it?
